The 1/2 Bath of My Dreams

Writer's picture: Amanda BullockAmanda Bullock

I am so excited to be sharing all the details of our half bathroom! Before we even knew our offer was accepted on our new home, I was dreaming of what I wanted to do in every square inch. But I also knew that I wanted to start in the 1/2 bath. I felt like this would be the most important bathroom in the house because it is on the main level and the one that would be used the most, and it would be the easiest to re-do because it is the smallest. We didn't even have all our boxes unpacked before we were ripping out the vanity, pounding away the tile, and had a full construction zone in the only half-unpacked garage.

This house was built in 1987 and I honestly don't think anything had been done to this half bath since the day the house was finished being built...except a new toilet, which is always appreciated ;) Here is a picture of what it looked like, so you can see it for yourself!

I mean, that vanity is a work of art, right? I don't know if that is my favorite or the cabinet above the toilet....it's a close one really haha.

While we were waiting to sign and close on the house we were buying all the supplies we needed for the bathroom. We had the vanity, the tile, the shiplap, the mirror and light, and all the decor we wanted. We had spent hours planning the whole thing out weeks before we moved in. You could say we were excited. I feel like I get asked often how I design and know what I want...well, I have one word for you-Pinterest! I browse for hours to find what I like and put a board together with all my ideas and pull things from a lot of different pictures. We started our design by knowing what tile and vanity we wanted, then went to wall design and paint color, and I finished with decor and the finishing touches. It took me longer to plan this bathroom than it did other rooms in our last home because we changed styles with this move. Our last home was all farmhouse, this home is a lot more modern. It takes time to plan design, but when you know what you want, you KNOW :) and seeing it come together after it has been in your mind forever, is seriously magic!

So after living here for about 2 weeks, one night at 11:00 pm, Chyler and I started tearing out the bathroom. We had the weekend to gut the room, and that we did!

I initially thought I wanted the wall behind the toilet to be all vertical shiplap, but I changed my mind and we decided on vertical shiplap around the whole bathroom, and honestly, I like it so much more than I would have liked the one wall. I feel like it adds so much character to the small room! We did 4-foot pieces of shiplap and then added molding to the top and bottom.

We got the shiplap on the walls and started tiling the floor. We knew we wanted the tile in this room to be the main attraction-we wanted something bold, poppy, and beautiful. I am obsessed with the tile we ended up choosing. If you need it too, click here to find it at Lowe's!

See all these whole pieces of tile??? I, Amanda, laid those all by myself! Mixed up the mortar and figured it out one night when Chyler was away. I have told myself through all these projects that I am not going to stand back and watch Chyler do the majority of the work-I am constantly learning how to use the tools, how to lay tile, how to be a better painter, and overall how to get my hands dirty and put in the work. This was the first project I did fully alone that I have felt really proud of. Now, cutting the tile and laying the smaller pieces? Chyler and my father-in-law did that job-I can't do it all yet, folks ;) But don't you worry-I'll get there.

Once the tile was done and all the shiplap was up, it was time to paint! After getting the shiplap up with brad nails, we wood-filled all the holes and sanded it all down to get it ready for paint. The paint color we chose was Sea Salt by Sherwin Williams. Here is the link for that color! It is the perfect light green-airy and bright; I would seriously put it in every room if I could.

Honestly, once all the shiplap, tile, and painting was easy from there! We got to put the toilet and vanity in and then my favorite part of course...get it all decorated!

Bathroom Shelves THE BEST SHELVES FOR THE PRICE! I have them in my master bath as well and I love them!

Black Mirror (only get it when it's 40% off!)

Vanity This one is a little bit different, but super close!

Door Handle After we put the handle on this bathroom, we changed every door handle in the house to this one, we love them!

I hope all these links help! One more thing, I am a huge scent freak...I like all the room sin my house to smell good. The Pura has been awesome for this room! My favorite scents are Dae and Volcano.

All in all we finished this project in a week....I honestly don't know how we did it so quickly…not even sleep, that’s for sure! We are so happy with the finished product, I wish every room in the house had the same vibe as this room. It is definitely my favorite room in the house so far! :)
